The word tapir comes from a Brazilian Indian word meaning thick, which refers to the animal s hide (rather than its stature or brains). The hide is covered with short black/brown hair and a full- grown male will stand just over four feet (1.2 meters) at the shoulder and six feet (two meters) in length. The tapir is an odd-toed ungulate; the front hooves have four toes and the back legs have three. One large toe in the middle of each hoof carries most of the animal s weight.
