Just south of the Man-O-War is the Carrie Bow Caye where, since 1972, the Smithsonian Research Station british airlines has been located. The Smithsonian has conducted huge studies on sponges and medicines derived from the ocean. Between Carrie Bow and Wee Wee Caye is a sand bore rise, where areas of exposed rock are occupied by nesting sooty terns. Beneath these exposed rocks are huge barracudas and rays.
There are also two canoe routes that can be enjoyed along this stretch of the Belize River. One is the 60-mile run from Bermudian Landing to the Haulover Bridge in Belize City and the other is the 60-mile run from Guanacaste Park to Bermudian Landing. If you are really ambitious, have the time, and enjoy jungle rivers, do both of these trips.
